Edison votes to approve more Flock cameras

PIX11 News · 1 week ago

The short version: Edison, NJ is going from 22 Flock cameras to 114 plus a drone, and PIX11 News caught the vote that got it there.

Our Take

Twenty-two cameras wasn't enough, so Edison Township just approved 92 more Flock Safety ALPRs — a more than fivefold jump — and threw in a drone for good measure. PIX11 News covered the vote, and the math here matters: this isn't a modest upgrade, it's a wholesale buildout of a town-wide tracking net. When a municipality goes from a couple dozen cameras to over a hundred in one vote, you're not looking at a tool for solving specific crimes anymore. You're looking at infrastructure built to log every car, every driver, every trip, all the time.

Drones add another layer entirely. Flock's pitch has always been "just license plates," but pairing ground cameras with aerial surveillance signals where this is really headed — a fused system that can follow people in real time, not just reconstruct where they've been after the fact. Edison residents should ask who approved this budget, what oversight exists, how long footage is kept, and whether any independent audit will ever happen. Those answers are rarely volunteered.

This is how it spreads: one town says yes, the next one points to it as precedent, and suddenly a hundred-camera network looks normal. Check our camera map to see what's already watching near you, and if you don't like what you find, take action before your town's next vote looks like Edison's.
