We must rally our communities against these ALPR and Flock Cameras. #Virginia #flock #deflock

We of Action Virginia · 2 months ago

The short version: A Virginia grassroots channel is urging neighbors to organize locally against Flock Safety's ALPR network before it becomes permanent infrastructure.

Our Take

Credit to We of Action Virginia for doing the unglamorous work that actually moves the needle: showing up at the local level and telling neighbors why a camera bolted to a pole at the end of their street deserves scrutiny. Flock Safety's pitch to city councils is always the same — stolen cars, Amber Alerts, peace of mind. What rarely gets mentioned in those pitches is the database of everyone's movements that gets built along the way, how long it's retained, who else can query it, and what happens when the contract renews itself year after year with zero public debate.

That's exactly why this kind of organizing matters more than another op-ed or think piece. City council meetings, FOIA requests, and neighbor-to-neighbor conversations are where ALPR contracts actually get approved or killed. Virginia has already seen fights over Flock deployments, and a community that doesn't know how many cameras are nearby or who's watching the footage is a community that can't push back effectively.

If you're in Virginia or anywhere else wondering what's already tracking your plate, start with our camera map to see what's been documented near you, then head to our take-action page for concrete steps — public records requests, council talking points, and ways to organize locally like the folks in this video are doing.
