The short version: A Norman, Oklahoma creator documents paint-splattered Flock cameras, capturing the quiet escalation of public frustration with ALPR surveillance.
Our Take
Credit to Liberty Over Surveillance for getting out on the ground in Norman and documenting what's actually happening to these cameras rather than just talking about them. White paint across a lens is a blunt message, but it's one more American town is apparently sending whether city councils want to hear it or not.
We don't endorse vandalism — it's illegal, and it gives Flock and local PD a convenient excuse to paint critics as lawless rather than engage with the real concerns about warrantless tracking, data retention, and mission creep. But the frustration behind it is real and earned. People aren't vandalizing these things in a vacuum; they're reacting to a surveillance rollout that happened with little public input and even less transparency about who gets access to the data and why.
If you want a legal outlet for that same energy, start by finding out how many of these cameras are actually in your city. Check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, then hit up our take-action page for ways to push back at city council meetings instead of with a paint can.
