Deputies: NC murder suspect captured in Union County after FLOCK hit

FOX Carolina News · 4 weeks ago

The short version: FOX Carolina reports a Flock camera hit helped Union County deputies capture a North Carolina murder suspect, the industry's favorite kind of headline.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: FOX Carolina's report, citing the Union County Sheriff's Office, describes a real arrest in a real murder case, and nobody here roots for violent fugitives to stay free. But these feel-good "Flock hit" stories are also exactly what Flock Safety's marketing team wants circulating on local news — they're the receipts the company waves at the next city council meeting to justify expanding a network that scans and stores the movements of millions of innocent drivers every single day.

One successful manhunt doesn't tell us how many plates got logged, how long that data sits in a database, who else can query it, or whether Union County has any real audit trail for misuse. Departments rarely publicize the false positives, the wrongful stops, or the quiet data-sharing agreements that stretch far beyond the original case. The math only looks good when you only count one side of the ledger.

If you want to know how far this dragnet has spread near you, check our camera map, and if your town is debating a Flock contract, our take-action page has the tools to push back before the cameras go up, not after.
