Flock Cameras: You either get Ultimate Liberty or Ultimate Safety, but you can't have both.

DeFlock America · 2 months ago

The short version: A new DeFlock America video skewers the false choice city councils keep buying: trade your privacy for 'safety' or get neither.

Our Take

DeFlock America's latest video nails something we see in city council chambers over and over: officials with little grasp of the technology nodding along as a sales rep frames Flock cameras as the only alternative to chaos. The title says it all — the pitch is always ultimate safety versus ultimate liberty, as if a network of license plate readers logging every car's movement is the only thing standing between your neighborhood and anarchy. That's not a security decision, it's a sales script, and the jab about AOL.com email addresses making these calls is funnier because it's barely an exaggeration of how low-tech the decision-making often is.

The real problem isn't just one bad camera or one gullible council member. It's that these systems get approved with almost no public debate, then quietly expand, get shared across agencies and states, and create a permanent record of where you drive, who you visit, and when. 'Safety' is doing a lot of work in that pitch, and it rarely comes with numbers showing the cameras actually solve more crime than they create surveillance risk. Check our camera map to see how far this has already spread near you.

Credit to DeFlock America for putting the absurdity of the false binary on camera. If this hits home, don't just watch and move on — our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back at the local level, where these contracts actually get signed.
