Huntsville police detail privacy safeguards for Flock cameras

WAFF 48 News & Weather · 1 month ago

The short version: Huntsville police tout Flock camera 'safeguards' in a community meeting, but promises of policy aren't the same as enforceable limits on surveillance.

Our Take

WAFF 48 News covered a Huntsville PD community meeting where officials walked residents through how Flock Safety cameras are used around the city and the safeguards they say are in place. Credit to WAFF for getting cameras rolling in the room and giving the department a chance to explain itself in public — that's more transparency than most cities bother with.

But here's the catch: a verbal briefing about policy isn't a binding limit on how long data is kept, who can query it, or whether it gets shared with other agencies, ICE, or private databases down the line. 'Safeguards' that live in a PowerPoint slide can change the next time command staff turns over or a new contract gets signed, and residents rarely get a vote on that. Audit logs, retention caps, and data-sharing agreements need to be public record, not just reassurances offered at a town hall.
