Portland moves forward on gunshot detection technology proposals

KGW News · 4 years ago

The short version: KGW News reports Portland is vetting gunshot-detection vendors like EAGL Technology, another acoustic surveillance layer that tends to travel alongside Flock cameras.

Our Take

Credit to KGW News for tracking this one closely — gunshot detection systems don't get the same scrutiny as license plate readers, but they raise the same core questions. Who owns the microphones blanketing a neighborhood? Who reviews the alerts? And once a city buys into 'detection as a service,' how often does that vendor relationship quietly expand into camera feeds, predictive policing dashboards, or data-sharing agreements nobody voted on?

We've watched this pattern before: a city starts with one surveillance tool sold as narrowly targeted at violent crime, then months later there's a Flock ALPR network bolted on, then a fusion center pulling it all together. Portland residents pushing back on gunshot detection should ask city council for the same transparency they'd demand for a plate-reader contract — audit logs, retention limits, and a public sunset clause, not a rubber stamp.

If you want to see whether Flock or similar systems are already active near you, check our camera map, and if Portland's proposal moves to a vote, our take-action page has tools for showing up before the contract is signed, not after.
