We’re Taking the Flock Camera Protest INSIDE City Hall! #shorts

Tymanthefirst · 2 months ago

The short version: A Gulf Shores resident is rallying neighbors to pack City Hall and speak out against Flock Safety ALPRs at the August 17 council meeting.

Our Take

Credit to creator Tymanthefirst for doing the unglamorous work that actually moves the needle: showing up in person, organizing a crowd, and making a city council sit through public comment instead of rubber-stamping a surveillance contract in a half-empty room. Gulf Shores is a small town, but that's exactly the point — Flock Safety doesn't need a big city to blanket a community in automated plate readers, it just needs a council that doesn't hear pushback. This video is a reminder that the pushback has to be loud and local.

Small-town rollouts like this one matter more than they get credit for. Once a handful of coastal Alabama towns sign on, vendors use that as leverage to pitch the next town over, and the next, until a patchwork of cameras becomes a regional tracking network nobody actually voted for. Public comment periods are one of the few levers residents have before the cameras go up and the data-sharing agreements get signed — which is why filling the chamber with signs and neighbors isn't just theater, it's strategy.

If you're in Gulf Shores or anywhere else watching Flock creep into your city budget, check our camera map to see what's already been installed near you, and use our take-action page for talking points before your own council meeting rolls around.
