SignalTrace: Flock Safety Survillance On Steroids
The short version: RTP Tech Tips flags SignalTrace, a Flock-style platform that fuses license plate reads with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RFID, and tire-pressure sensor data into one tracking profile.
Our Take
Credit to RTP Tech Tips for surfacing SignalTrace, because this is exactly the kind of mission creep we've been warning about. Flock Safety built its brand on 'just' reading plates, but the industry's real trajectory is toward fusing every wireless signal your car and devices emit β Bluetooth beacons, Wi-Fi probes, RFID tags, even tire pressure sensor IDs β into a single persistent identity. Once that fusion happens, a plate swap or a rental car won't save your anonymity; your phone and tires will rat you out instead.
This matters because the public debate around ALPR has mostly stayed narrow: is Flock reading my plate, yes or no. Products like SignalTrace show that the actual surveillance stack being sold to police departments is far broader, stitching together data streams most drivers don't even know are broadcasting. That's a much bigger privacy problem than a camera at an intersection, and it's happening with almost no public oversight or disclosure about what's being collected or retained.
If you want to know whether this kind of infrastructure is already active near you, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not wait for your city council to ask the hard questions, our take-action resources walk you through how to push back now.
