Ultimate Smart Home - License Plate Recognition (LPR)

runesblog · 3 years ago

The short version: A hobbyist's Home Assistant/Node-RED project using Platerecognizer.com shows just how cheap and easy DIY license plate recognition has become for anyone with a driveway camera.

Our Take

Credit to runesblog for a clean build: a PIR-triggered snapshot, a call to Platerecognizer's API, and a smart speaker announcing whose car just pulled in. It's a neat piece of home automation. It's also a reminder that ALPR isn't some exotic government-only capability anymore — it's a consumer API and a weekend project. When plate-reading gets this accessible, the barrier to building a surveillance system, personal or otherwise, basically disappears.

The stakes are different at driveway scale than at city scale, obviously. One homeowner logging who parks outside their house isn't the same as a networked grid of poles feeding a shared database to police departments and private subscribers, the way Flock Safety operates. But projects like this illustrate the underlying trend we track every day: plate recognition software has gotten cheap, fast, and trivial to bolt onto existing camera hardware. That's exactly the pipeline that turned Flock from a startup into a nationwide dragnet with almost no public oversight of who queries the data or why.

If a hobbyist can stand up plate recognition in an afternoon, it's worth asking what a company with venture funding and law enforcement contracts is capable of — and who's watching them do it. Check our camera map to see what's already deployed near you, and hit take action if you want to push back on unaccountable ALPR networks in your community.
