The Flock Epidemic
The short version: Bladed Angel's "The Flock Epidemic" frames Flock Safety's ALPR sprawl as a generational wake-up call, and we're glad more young people are paying attention.
Our Take
Credit to Bladed Angel for putting a name on something we've been tracking for years: the quiet, block-by-block normalization of automated license plate readers. The video's framing — Flock, Axon, call it whatever you want, it's mass surveillance — is exactly right. These companies rebrand, merge, and rename their products, but the underlying infrastructure is the same: a nationwide network logging your movements whether or not you've ever been suspected of a crime.
What's genuinely encouraging is the Gen Z angle the video highlights. This technology has mostly flown under the radar for the people old enough to vote on city council budgets but too busy to notice a new camera pole going up at the end of their street. If younger people are the ones finally asking "wait, why is there a camera reading my plate every time I leave my neighborhood," that's a good sign. Public pressure has already gotten contracts cancelled in some towns — but only because people showed up and asked questions.
If this video got you curious about what's actually watching your car, go check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, and head to our take-action page for concrete steps if you want to push back at a city council meeting or file records requests of your own.
