Palo Alto sings Get Flock Out!

Matt Schlegel · 1 month ago

The short version: Palo Alto residents turned a City Hall rally into a Ghostbusters parody, proving opposition to Flock Safety's ALPR network can be both serious and genuinely fun.

Our Take

Credit to Matt Schlegel for capturing this one: a crowd of Palo Alto residents outside City Hall belting out a Flock-themed rewrite of the Ghostbusters theme, courtesy of lyricist Kat S. and documented by Paul Rosenblum of ProBonoPhoto.org. It's a small moment, but it says something bigger — when a surveillance fight gets specific enough that neighbors are writing parody songs about it, you know the issue has moved from abstract privacy debate to kitchen-table concern.

Rallies like this don't happen because people misunderstand what ALPRs do. They happen because residents have read the council agendas, looked at the vendor contracts, and decided they don't want a private company's camera network logging every car that passes through their city, retained in a database with little independent oversight. Humor is just the delivery mechanism for a pretty blunt message: get the Flock out.

Palo Alto isn't alone — this same fight is playing out in city council chambers across the country as Flock Safety expands.
