Austin mayor says 'probably having license plate readers would've been helpful' in shooting spree

KVUE · 5 months ago

The short version: Austin's mayor floated license plate readers as a fix for random shootings, but KVUE's report shows the familiar pattern: tragedy first, surveillance pitch second.

Our Take

Credit to KVUE for capturing the moment live, because this is how it always starts. A violent, scary crime happens, cameras aren't rolling yet, and before the ink dries on the first article a local official is on camera saying ALPRs "probably" would've helped. Not "did help." Not "here's the case where it worked." Just a vague, reflexive nod toward more surveillance infrastructure as the answer to public fear.

That's the pattern worth watching closely. Flock Safety and similar vendors don't need to prove their systems solve crime — they just need officials to say the word "helpful" on the record. Once that quote exists, it becomes the justification for a new contract, a new budget line, a new network of cameras logging every plate that passes, whether or not the people on those plates did anything wrong. Austin already has Flock infrastructure in place; comments like Watson's are how cities quietly expand it without ever putting the tradeoffs in front of voters.

If you live in or near Austin, it's worth knowing what's already watching your commute. Check our camera map to see documented ALPR locations near you, and if you want to push back on unchecked expansion, our take-action page has concrete steps for making your city council actually debate this instead of rubber-stamping it.
