A drone that flies ahead of officers to "assess situations" sounds efficient in a press conference, but in practice it means live video of a dense, camera-saturated tourist district getting piped into a police command center with minimal transparency about retention, data sharing, or which incidents actually justify launch.
New Orleans already has one of the most aggressive ALPR and camera networks in the country, and drones are just the next layer stacked on top of that infrastructure. Once a department normalizes routine drone launches for "immediate response," the line between targeted investigation and blanket area surveillance gets blurry fast, especially in a neighborhood packed with residents, workers, and visitors who never consented to being tracked from above.
