Flock camera presentation privacy questions in Abilene

KTXS News · 1 week ago

The short version: KTXS News covers Abilene's police chief pitching Flock cameras to the city council, where privacy questions finally got some air time.

Our Take

Credit to KTXS News for capturing something that happens in city halls across the country but rarely makes the evening news: a police chief standing before elected officials to sell them on a network of automated license plate readers, and at least a few council members or residents pushing back with privacy concerns. That pushback matters, because in most towns these contracts sail through on a consent agenda with zero public debate.

We don't know yet exactly what commitments Abilene PD made about data retention, audit logs, or who outside the department can query the system — and we won't speculate. But that's precisely the information residents should be demanding in writing before a single camera goes up. 'Trust us' is not a policy, and once a Flock network is live, rolling it back is a lot harder than voting it in.

If you're in Abilene or anywhere else watching a similar presentation unfold, check our camera map to see what's already been deployed near you, and use our take-action resources to push your own council for the transparency Abilene residents are right to ask for.
