Flock: Emotionless Data Collection

DeFlock America · 2 months ago

The short version: A short clip from DeFlock America nails the core problem with Flock Safety ALPRs: they're indifferent machines that log everyone, guilty or not, every single time.

Our Take

The point made in this clip is simple but easy to forget when the marketing talks about 'solving crime': an ALPR camera doesn't know the difference between a stolen car and your neighbor driving to work. It has no judgment, no discretion, no sense of proportion. It just captures plate, time, and location — for every vehicle, every pass, forever added to a database. That's the whole business model, and it's worth sitting with how different that is from a cop on patrol who can use context and common sense.

Credit to the DeFlock America channel for boiling this down to something you can say in a sentence: it's a robot, and robots don't exercise restraint unless someone forces them to. That's exactly why community oversight, retention limits, and audit trails matter so much — because the system itself will never self-regulate. Left unchecked, 'mass data collection' isn't a side effect, it's the product.
