Police cameras and the uncomfortable truth about surveillance

Debaito · 5 months ago

The short version: Debaito's video pokes at how police-camera AI gets demoed with softball prompts instead of adversarial stress tests, and that gap matters for everyone living under Flock's gaze.

Our Take

Debaito's framing cuts right to something we harp on constantly: the public almost never sees these systems tested the way they'll actually be used — against messy, real-world, adversarial conditions. Vendors like Flock Safety love a polished demo reel where the AI reads a plate cleanly in good lighting and flags a 'wanted vehicle' right on cue. What you don't get is the footage of false positives, misreads on dirty plates, or the quiet human who gets pulled over because an algorithm was confident and wrong.

That gap between marketing and reality is exactly why independent scrutiny matters. Police departments buy these networks based on vendor promises, not third-party audits, and the cameras get bolted to poles in your neighborhood with little public debate. The video's point about not putting the model 'in a ring against its biggest' critics is really a point about accountability — nobody stress-tests power when they're the one profiting from it.

We built our camera map because residents deserve to know where this hardware actually is, not just what the sales pitch says it does. If your town is rolling out ALPRs without a public hearing, check our take-action page for how to push back before the cherry-picked demo becomes your street's permanent reality.
