keygon License Plate Recognition Equipment for Smart Parking Access

Keygon MrHu · 4 months ago

The short version: A vendor demo for Keygon's parking-gate plate readers is a reminder that ALPR tech is being sold everywhere as a convenience, not just a policing tool.

Our Take

This clip from Keygon MrHu is a straightforward product demo — license plate recognition gear marketed for parking lots and gated access control, the kind of thing a landlord or mall operator might buy off a commercial listing. There's no mention of Flock Safety or law enforcement, and we're not claiming otherwise. But it's worth pausing on anyway, because it shows how normalized plate-scanning hardware has become. The same core technology that powers city-wide surveillance networks is now packaged as a mundane convenience feature for office buildings and condo complexes.

That's exactly how mass camera surveillance creeps into daily life: not through one big dramatic rollout, but through thousands of small, boring installs sold as 'smart' access control. Every private lot and apartment garage that logs plates is another silent node capturing where you park, when, and how often — data that can be subpoenaed, hacked, or quietly sold on, regardless of whether a police department ever touches the device. Vendors rarely talk about retention policies or who else gets access to that log.

We built DeFlock to track the publicly known side of this — the government and quasi-public ALPR cameras showing up on streets and highways. Check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, and if you want to push back on expanding plate surveillance in your own community, our take-action page has concrete steps to start with.
