Chandler to make decision on flock camera contract

Arizona’s Family (3TV / CBS 5) · 5 months ago

The short version: Chandler's city council grilled Flock Safety on data storage and access before signing off, a rare moment of real scrutiny most cities skip entirely.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: Arizona's Family caught something you don't see often enough — elected officials actually asking Flock Safety hard questions before writing a check. Who holds the data, how long it sits in the cloud, who else gets to peek at it — these are the exact questions that should be asked in every city council chamber before a single camera goes up, not after residents start noticing poles on their street.

The fact that this is newsworthy at all tells you how low the bar is. In most towns, Flock contracts get rubber-stamped on a consent agenda between sewer repairs and a parks grant, with zero public debate about retention windows or which agencies can query the database. Chandler pressing for details is the minimum level of diligence taxpayers deserve, and it shouldn't take a TV crew showing up for that to happen.

If you're in Chandler or anywhere else with a Flock contract moving through city hall, don't wait for council to ask the right questions on your behalf — show up and ask them yourself. Check our camera map to see what's already deployed near you, and hit take action for tools to push back before the ink dries on the next contract.
