Credit to WPTV News for doing what too few local newsrooms bother with: asking hard questions about the cameras multiplying on Florida roads instead of just running the sheriff's press release. The phrase "peeling back the secrecy" in their framing is the whole story. These networks were sold to city councils as quiet crime-fighting tools, but the details of who can access the data, how long it's kept, and which outside agencies get to query it are routinely kept vague or buried in vendor contracts nobody reads.
That secrecy is the actual problem, not just the cameras themselves. Flock Safety and similar ALPR systems create a rolling record of where you drive, when, and how often, and that record can be shared across jurisdictions in ways most residents never agreed to and don't know about. "Crime-fighting tool vs privacy concerns" isn't really a fair fight when the public only ever hears one side make its case in these procurement meetings.
