Automatic license plate readers added to UCF campus

WESH 2 News · 7 years ago

The short version: WESH 2 News reports UCF added automated license plate readers to campus, quietly expanding the surveillance net over students, faculty, and visitors.

Our Take

WESH 2 News flags a story we've seen play out on campus after campus: a university quietly adds automatic license plate readers in the name of "safety," and suddenly every car driving in or out of UCF is logged, timestamped, and stored in a database most students never agreed to be part of. Credit to the WESH team for putting this on the local news radar, because these rollouts rarely get a public vote or a real community debate before the cameras go up.

Here's the part that never makes it into the press release: campus ALPR data doesn't stay campus-only. It can be pooled with city police, county sheriffs, and other Flock-network agencies, meaning a student's daily commute pattern becomes searchable well beyond the parking office. That's a lot of location history on young adults who thought a parking pass was just for finding a spot, not for building a movement profile.

If you're in Orlando or anywhere near a growing university surveillance footprint, check our camera map to see what's already tracking your street, and hit take-action for concrete steps to push back before this becomes just another "normal" part of campus life.
