Flock Alpha is coming with drones that can scan you

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 1 month ago

The short version: A YouTube deep dive flags Flock Safety's push into drone-mounted scanning, warning that ALPR surveillance is leaving the roadside and taking to the sky.

Our Take

The channel Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency is sounding an alarm worth paying attention to: Flock Safety isn't content staying bolted to a pole anymore. If drones become the next delivery mechanism for Flock's recognition tech, the whole premise of 'it's just at intersections' collapses. A drone doesn't need a fixed mounting point, a permit, or a predictable patrol route — it can hover wherever the operator wants, scanning plates, faces, and whatever else the sensor package is tuned to pick up.

That mobility is exactly the problem. Fixed cameras at least give communities a fighting chance to find them, map them, and organize against them. Airborne scanning erodes even that minimal transparency, folding surveillance into the background of everyday life in a way that's harder to see and harder to contest. We can't verify every technical claim in the video, but the trajectory it describes — ALPR vendors expanding capability faster than any public oversight can keep pace with — matches what we've been tracking for years.

Credit to the creator for connecting Flock's ambitions to the bigger picture of automated ID and tracking infrastructure most outlets ignore. If you want to see how much of this is already deployed in your area, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back locally, our take-action resources walk through how to raise it with your city council before the drones show up too.
