Do You Consent to Surveillance?
The short version: A creator confronts a security guard with his own medicine, exposing the double standard baked into a surveillance society that films you but bristles when filmed back.
Our Take
Credit to outtheway916 for a simple but effective stunt: turn the camera on someone whose job is watching others, and watch the discomfort set in. That flinch is the whole story. We've normalized a world where cameras point down at the public constantly, but the people and systems doing the watching rarely have to sit with the feeling of being watched themselves.
That double standard is exactly what fuels the growth of ALPR networks like Flock Safety's. Communities get told these cameras are no big deal, just helpful tools, yet the companies and agencies deploying them push back hard whenever residents ask basic questions about who sees the data, how long it's kept, or who it's shared with. If surveillance is fine for the surveilled, it should be fine for the surveillers too. Funny how that logic never seems to hold.
If this clip got you thinking about who's watching your block, check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, and visit take action for concrete steps to push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your town.
