Home Invasion Suspects Arrested Immediately Thanks to a Proactive Officer and a Flock Alert

Flock · 2 years ago

The short version: Flock's own promo video spotlights one dramatic arrest while skipping the costs, errors, and scope of the dragnet that makes such 'hits' possible.

Our Take

This clip comes straight from Flock Safety's own channel, and it shows: a single dramatic success story, tidy narration, and a homeowner thanking the system that happened to work in this case. We're not going to pretend a home invasion isn't terrifying or that catching armed suspects quickly isn't a good outcome. But a vendor's highlight reel is not an audit. It's marketing, built to justify expanding a network that scans and stores the movements of everyone, not just the four people arrested that night.

What the video leaves out is the math. For every case like this, there are thousands of plates logged on innocent drivers running errands, going to church, visiting an ex, or driving to a protest — data that sits in a database for weeks, gets shared across agency lines, and occasionally gets misused or hit with a false match that sends an officer in with guns drawn. Flock doesn't put those stories in a 3-minute reel, but they're part of the same system. 'It worked once' is not the same as 'it's worth the tradeoff for everyone's privacy, all the time.'

If a story like this makes you curious how many of these cameras are already watching your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you want to push back on unchecked expansion in your city, our take-action page has concrete steps.
