Navy Veteran flocked over 100xs after filing citizens complaint against police

Mind Emancipationist · 4 weeks ago

The short version: A Navy veteran says he was flagged by Flock ALPRs over 100 times after filing a complaint against the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department, raising retaliation concerns.

Our Take

Credit to Mind Emancipationist for surfacing this one, because if the core claim holds up, it's the nightmare scenario critics of ALPR networks have been warning about for years: a citizen exercises his right to file a complaint against law enforcement, and then finds his movements logged over a hundred times by the very network that agency has access to. Whether or not every one of those hits was a deliberate retaliatory lookup, the fact that this is even plausible to ask tells you everything about how little oversight exists on who queries these systems, why, and how often.

This is the structural problem with Flock Safety's model in a nutshell. Departments routinely claim ALPR data is only pulled for active investigations, but audit logs are frequently thin, access controls are loose, and the people being watched have almost no way to independently verify how their plate history is being used against them. A veteran who filed a civilian complaint shouldn't have to wonder if he's now a person of interest in a system with cameras on nearly every route he drives.

Stories like this are exactly why tracking camera locations and pushing for real transparency rules matters. Check our camera map to see what's watching in your area, and hit up take action if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR deployment in your community.
