Darth Vader Defends Flock Cameras in City Hall
The short version: A Darth Vader cosplayer testifying for Flock cameras at a city council meeting turns satire into one of the sharpest critiques of ALPR mass surveillance we've seen.
Our Take
Credit to FAR OUT WITH FAUST for the bit: someone in a Vader costume steps up to public comment and makes the case for Flock Safety cameras with a straight face, and the joke lands harder than most op-eds. That's because the pitch barely needs exaggeration. "Track every vehicle, know where everyone goes, all in the name of safety" is already the actual sales language of ALPR vendors. Put it in the mouth of the Empire's chief enforcer and the costume stops being the punchline — the policy is.
This is why satire works on this issue better than spreadsheets sometimes. Council chambers hear "public safety" and nod along, but strip away the branding and what's left is a always-on network logging plates, timestamps, and locations for every car that passes, shared across agencies with little independent oversight. Vader saying it out loud just makes people notice what they've been agreeing to.
If the bit made you laugh and then made you uneasy, that's the correct reaction. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your own streets, and hit take action if you'd rather your city council hear real objections instead of waiting for a guy in a cape to say it for them.
