Flock Cameras in Pearland: Public Safety, Privacy, and Accountability

Pearland Stories · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Pearland Stories hands the mic to a police PR officer to defend Flock ALPRs, offering reassurance instead of scrutiny.

Our Take

Brant Mills' sit-down with Pearland PD's public information officer, Chad, is the kind of segment Flock Safety loves: a friendly local show, a badge on screen, and a lot of reassuring talk about "public safety" with none of the harder questions about retention windows, data sharing, or who else can query these plate reads. Credit to Pearland Stories for covering the topic at all, but when the only voice on camera is the department's own spokesperson, viewers get a press release dressed up as journalism, not accountability.

That's the pattern in city after city — a PIO explains how cameras helped solve one crime, and the conversation stops there, never touching the thousands of scans of innocent drivers logged every day, the vague interagency sharing agreements, or the total absence of judicial oversight before a camera fires. Pearland residents deserve to know how long their plate data sits in Flock's cloud, which outside agencies (including federal ones) can pull from it, and what recourse exists if the system is misused. None of that showed up in this episode.

If you're in Pearland or anywhere in Texas wondering whether these cameras are already watching your street, check our camera map to see what's been logged nearby, and visit our take-action page for ways to push your city council for real transparency instead of a PR segment.
