Santa Monica police drones help catch car thief in action

ABC7 · 2 years ago

The short version: ABC7 shows a Santa Monica police drone nabbing a car burglar, but the feel-good clip glosses over the always-watching infrastructure making it possible.

Our Take

Credit to ABC7 for the quick hit, but a 30-second "drone catches bad guy" clip is designed to make you feel good about tech that raises much bigger questions once the cameras roll past the highlight reel. Drone-as-first-responder programs don't operate in a vacuum — they're usually paired with fixed ALPR camera networks, license plate cross-referencing, and real-time crime center dashboards that log far more than the one guy caught red-handed at the beach lot. The footage that makes air is the win; the footage that doesn't is everyone else's plate, face, and movements getting swept up along the way.

Santa Monica isn't unique here. Departments across the country are stacking drones on top of Flock Safety cameras and calling it "public safety innovation," while the actual policy conversation — retention windows, data sharing with other agencies, audit trails, warrant requirements — gets skipped because nobody wants to argue with a video of a thief getting cuffed. That's exactly how mass surveillance infrastructure gets normalized: one satisfying arrest at a time, with zero scrutiny of what else the system is doing 24/7.
