Has Flock searched your license plate? Here's how to check

NewsNation · 2 months ago

The short version: NewsNation reports there's now a way to check if Flock cameras have scanned your plate — a small transparency win in a system built to avoid it.

Our Take

Credit to NewsNation for putting a national spotlight on something we've been flagging for a while: Flock Safety's camera network has quietly grown into one of the largest license plate surveillance systems in the country, and until recently, most drivers had no way to know if they'd been swept into it. The fact that a workaround now exists for checking your own plate is progress, but it shouldn't take a records request workaround to find out that a private company and your local police department have been logging your movements.

That's the real story here. Flock doesn't just photograph a plate — it builds a searchable history of where you've been, how often, and with whom, all stored in a database that can be queried by thousands of agencies with little consistent oversight. The ability to check "has Flock scanned my plate" is a nice consumer-facing gesture, but it doesn't change the underlying architecture: blanket collection first, questions about consent and use later.

If this segment makes you want to know exactly where these cameras are sitting in your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you want to push back on a system that treats every driver as a suspect by default, our take-action page has concrete next steps.
