Walton County bans Flock cameras from county right-of-ways

WMBB News 13 · 1 month ago

The short version: Walton County, Florida pulled the plug on Flock cameras along county rights-of-way, proving local governments can push back on ALPR sprawl.

Our Take

Credit to WMBB News 13 for flagging a story that doesn't get enough airtime: a county government actually telling Flock Safety no. Walton County drawing a line on its rights-of-way is a reminder that these camera networks aren't inevitable infrastructure — they're policy choices, and policy choices can be reversed.

We don't know yet whether this is a full retreat or just a jurisdictional technicality that Flock and local police will try to route around with a different agency's blessing. ALPR vendors are persistent, and "banned here" often turns into "relocated three hundred feet away" on a road the county doesn't control. Residents should watch for that shuffle.

Still, this is the kind of local win that adds up. Check our camera map to see what's actually deployed near you, and if you want to push your own county commission toward a similar stance, our take-action page has the tools to get started.
