Bakersfield police credit Flock cameras in arrests tied to alleged child sex crimes

KBAK - KBFX - Eyewitness News - BakersfieldNow · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Bakersfield PD touts Flock cameras in horrific child sex crime arrests, but the real story — how these networks operate and who else can tap them — goes unexamined.

Our Take

Credit to KBAK/BakersfieldNow for getting police on camera talking specifics about these cases. Nobody's going to argue that catching someone accused of kidnapping and raping an 11-year-old is a bad outcome. But these are exactly the stories police departments reach for when they want to install more cameras with zero debate: pick the most horrifying crime imaginable, credit the technology, and hope nobody asks follow-up questions about how the system actually works the other 364 days a year.

What's missing from coverage like this is almost always the same: how many plates does Bakersfield's Flock network scan daily, who else — other agencies, federal partners, private subscribers — can query that data, how long is it retained, and what happens when the system flags the wrong car or the wrong person. A win in a rape case doesn't erase the fact that every driver in Bakersfield is having their movements logged regardless of suspicion. That's the tradeoff local reporting almost never puts on screen.

If you want to know whether these cameras are watching your own street, check our camera map, and if you think your city council should be answering harder questions before signing new Flock contracts, see what you can do.
