Huntsville Holds Flock Camera Forum | Sept. 16, 2026 | News 19 at 6 p.m.

WHNT News 19 · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Huntsville held a public forum on Flock cameras, a rare moment of civic engagement that other cities should be forced to replicate before, not after, installation.

Our Take

Credit to WHNT News 19 for covering Huntsville's public forum on Flock Safety cameras — this is exactly the kind of local accountability moment that too often gets skipped entirely. Most cities quietly sign contracts with Flock, flip the switch on a network of license plate readers, and only face public questions after residents notice the cameras on their street. Huntsville at least gave people a room and a microphone, even if the cameras were likely already approved or installed by the time anyone got to ask hard questions.

The real test isn't whether a forum happens, it's what comes out of it. Did officials actually answer who has access to the data, how long it's retained, whether other agencies or federal databases can query it, and what happens when the system flags an innocent driver? Public forums can be genuine accountability or they can be a box-checking exercise designed to generate a friendly news segment before business as usual resumes. North Alabama residents deserve the former, not a photo op dressed up as transparency.

If you're in Huntsville or anywhere else grappling with a Flock rollout, don't wait for the one town hall to make your voice heard. Check our camera map to see what's already been deployed near you, and use our take-action resources to push your council for real oversight — public audit logs, data-sharing limits, and a sunset clause — before the next camera goes up.
