Community divided over Flock Safety cameras after Treasure Coast homicide arrest

RickieBobbieNO26 · 1 month ago

The short version: A Treasure Coast homicide arrest is being used to sell Flock cameras to residents who still have real privacy concerns worth taking seriously.

Our Take

Credit to RickieBobbieNO26 for capturing something we see over and over: a sheriff stands up, points to a solved case, and suddenly the cameras are beyond debate. We're glad the case was solved. But "it helped catch one guy" has become the universal permission slip for blanketing entire counties with license plate readers that log every car, every resident, every day — guilty or not.

That's the part the press conference always skips. Indian River County residents pushing back aren't saying cops should have zero tools. They're asking who sees this data, how long it's kept, whether it's shared with ICE or out-of-state agencies, and what happens when the system misreads a plate and sends officers to the wrong house with guns drawn — which has already happened elsewhere with this exact technology. A single success story doesn't answer any of that, and it shouldn't be allowed to end the conversation.

If you're on the Treasure Coast or anywhere else wondering whether Flock has already shown up in your neighborhood, check our camera map and see for yourself. And if you think your city council should be asking harder questions before renewing a Flock contract, our take-action page has concrete steps to push back.
