Arlington PD Announces Expansion of Drone as a First Responder Program

arlingtonpolicemedia · 1 year ago

The short version: Arlington PD's own promo video touts its growing drone-as-first-responder program, but never mentions the automated aerial surveillance that comes with it.

Our Take

Arlington Police Media wants you to see this as a good-news story: faster response times, better situational awareness, technology doing the heavy lifting so officers don't have to. What it doesn't mention is that "Drone as First Responder" programs quietly normalize routine aerial surveillance over entire neighborhoods, often flying in response to minor calls that have nothing to do with the emergency that justified the program in the first place.

These programs are frequently built on the same infrastructure and vendor relationships as Flock Safety's ALPR network — real-time crime centers, cloud storage, data-sharing agreements — expanding the surveillance dragnet from your license plate to your backyard. Departments rarely publish clear policies on retention, sharing with other agencies, or when a drone launch actually requires a warrant. "Expansion" is the operative word here, and it usually happens with little public debate before the cameras are already in the air.

If your department is running ALPRs, drones, or both, you deserve to know where the cameras are and how to push back. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your area, and visit take action for tools to demand transparency before the next "expansion" announcement.
