Lexington Police to deploy more Flock Safety ALPR cameras

Flock · 4 years ago

The short version: A local news segment on Flock's own channel cheers Lexington PD's camera expansion without asking who watches the watchers or how long the data lives.

Our Take

Another day, another local news hit reposted straight from Flock Safety's own YouTube channel — which tells you a lot about how these stories get framed. Lexington PD gets to announce more ALPR coverage, WTVQ runs the segment, and Flock amplifies it as free advertising. Missing from that loop: any meaningful scrutiny of retention windows, who can query the database, or whether expansion was debated in a public meeting versus just approved as a budget line.

This is the pattern we track constantly — a handful of cameras becomes a city-wide network becomes a regional sharing agreement with agencies Lexington residents never voted to loop in. Flock's own dashboards show departments routinely searching plates for other agencies, out-of-state requests, and uses that go well beyond the 'find the stolen car' pitch used to sell the system to city councils. Once the cameras are up, the use cases always grow.

If you're in Lexington or anywhere in Kentucky, check our camera map to see what's already logging your plate, and use our take-action guide to push your council for retention limits, audit logs, and real public input before the next expansion gets rubber-stamped.
