Vandalism Targets AI Surveillance Cameras in Houston

Knewdex News · 4 weeks ago

The short version: Knewdex News reports that someone in Houston's Old Braeswood neighborhood is sabotaging Flock Safety ALPR cameras, a blunt sign of local frustration with surveillance.

Our Take

Credit to Knewdex News for catching this one: four Flock Safety cameras knocked out in Old Braeswood, a neighborhood that isn't exactly short on resources to push back through normal channels. That's the part worth sitting with. When even well-connected residents feel like sabotage is faster than city council or a public records request, it says something about how little input communities actually get before these cameras go up.

We don't endorse vandalism — it's illegal, it gets people hurt, and it gives Flock a convenient narrative about "protecting infrastructure" instead of answering for the infrastructure itself. But the underlying anger is familiar. These networks get installed under HOA or police department sole discretion, logging every plate that passes, with little disclosure about who sees the data, how long it's kept, or who it gets shared with. Frustration tends to boil over when people feel surveilled without ever being asked.

If you want a lawful way to push back, start by finding out what's actually watching your street on our camera map, then use our take-action guide to push your city for transparency, audits, or outright removal — before someone else decides a crowbar is the only option left.
