Flock is just a distraction watch for Motorola vigilant

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 1 month ago

The short version: A YouTuber argues Flock Safety is a convenient boogeyman distracting from Motorola Solutions' even larger ALPR empire, Vigilant.

Our Take

This channel, run by a creator who covers everything from digital IDs to CBDCs, makes a point worth sitting with even if you don't buy the rest of the worldview: Flock Safety is not the only — or even the biggest — fish in the automated license plate reader pond. Motorola Solutions owns Vigilant Solutions, DRN Data, and a sprawling portfolio of surveillance tech that predates Flock by years and feeds into the same law enforcement databases, the same fusion centers, and increasingly the same private data-sharing networks. Treating Flock as the sole villain lets the older, more entrenched player operate with less scrutiny.

We'd push back a little on the framing of 'distraction' — Flock earns plenty of criticism on its own merits, from its explosive nationwide camera rollout to its history of data breaches and mission-creep use by police departments outside their stated purpose. But the underlying warning is sound: ALPR surveillance isn't a single-company problem, it's an industry problem, and Motorola's footprint through Vigilant is arguably just as invasive, just less visible because it's been normalized longer.

Wherever the camera comes from, the fix is the same: know what's watching you and push back locally. Check our camera map to see what's been deployed near you, and use our take-action resources to push your city council on transparency and retention policies — regardless of whose logo is on the pole.
