What's a Flock Camera?

12 News · 5 months ago

The short version: A local news primer on Flock cameras in Arizona is a reminder that these systems are spreading fast with little public debate about their reach.

Our Take

12 News out of Arizona is doing what local newsrooms should be doing more of: asking the basic question of "what is this black-and-white box bolted to a pole near your neighborhood?" The fact that a mainstream TV station still has to explain what a Flock camera is, years into this rollout, tells you everything about how quietly this infrastructure has spread. Law enforcement's pitch is always the same: it solves crimes. What rarely gets equal airtime is how these networks log every passing vehicle, regardless of suspicion, and feed that data into a system that can be queried by agencies far beyond the one that installed the camera.

That's the part a short news segment can't fully capture: Flock isn't a single camera watching a single intersection, it's a nationwide, searchable ledger of where your car has been. One city's "helps solve crimes" camera becomes another jurisdiction's tool for tracking someone who's done nothing wrong in that state. Arizona isn't unique here, it's just the latest place getting the explainer treatment while the cameras keep multiplying.
