AMBER Alert to Arrest: The 60-Minute Takedown

Flock · 7 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promotional video touts a fast AMBER Alert resolution, but a single success story from the company that sells the cameras isn't evidence the system is safe or limited.

Our Take

This one's straight from Flock Safety's own channel, so let's call it what it is: a marketing reel, not an independent account. A fast AMBER Alert resolution is genuinely good news for that family, and nobody here is rooting against finding missing kids. But a company producing a highlight clip of its product working exactly as advertised tells us nothing about the thousands of scans that have nothing to do with child abductions — the commuters, protesters, and ordinary people whose plates get logged, stored, and shared every single day.

Police departments and Flock love to lead with the AMBER Alert and stolen-vehicle cases because they're the easiest to defend publicly. What these clips never show is how often the same network gets queried for immigration sweeps, abortion-related travel, or political surveillance, or how long that location data sits in a database before anyone deletes it. One dramatic 60-minute success story doesn't answer basic questions about audit logs, data-sharing agreements between agencies, or what happens when the system gets it wrong.

If your town has these cameras, you deserve to know who's watching, why, and under what rules — not just the feel-good reel. Check our camera map to see what's already been documented near you, and if you want to push back on unchecked deployment, our take-action page has concrete steps.
