Sun Lakes Security Update | New Cameras & License Plate Reader System
The short version: Sun Lakes Country Club's own video touts new ALPR cameras, another reminder that license-plate surveillance is creeping into HOAs and gated communities with zero public oversight.
Our Take
Credit to the Sun Lakes Country Club channel for putting this update out in the open, but the content itself is exactly the kind of quiet infrastructure expansion we track at DeFlock. A homeowners association rolling out new cameras and a license plate reader system isn't just a "security improvement" — it's the installation of a permanent surveillance net over everyone who drives in and out, including residents, guests, delivery drivers, and contractors who never agreed to be logged.
HOAs are especially worrying ground for ALPR deployment because they sit outside the normal channels of public accountability that at least nominally apply to police departments. There's typically no public records request you can file, no city council meeting where residents get to grill the board about retention periods, data sharing agreements, or who else gets access to that plate data — Flock's law enforcement network included. A private community board can approve this kind of system in a single meeting with far less friction than a municipal police department would face.
If you live in a community considering this kind of system, or you've already spotted the cameras going up, check our map to document it, and see our take-action page for ways to push back before the cameras become permanent fixtures nobody remembers agreeing to.
