NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT THIS: “Flock Cameras or Fear Tactics? The Arrests That Raise Big Questions”

Mr.Hellnwal · 3 months ago

The short version: A YouTuber's report on officers allegedly arrested for misusing Flock ALPR data is a stark reminder that the people running this surveillance network aren't immune from abusing it.

Our Take

Credit to Mr.Hellnwal for putting a spotlight on something we've been saying for a while: the danger of ALPR networks isn't hypothetical, it's operational. Whether or not every detail in the video holds up under scrutiny, the underlying premise tracks with what we've documented for years — Flock's system hands enormous, low-friction access to vehicle movement data to thousands of police employees, and that access is only as trustworthy as the weakest link in the department. When officers themselves are accused of exploiting that access, it stops being a slippery-slope argument and starts being a pattern.

This is the part of the surveillance debate that often gets buried under marketing copy about "solving crime faster." Nobody debates whether a camera can read a plate. The real question is who gets to look up that plate, for what reason, and who's watching the watchers. Audit logs and internal policies sound reassuring until you realize enforcement depends entirely on agencies policing themselves — the same agencies selling the public on how safe and necessary these networks are.

If stories like this unsettle you, that's the point — get informed instead of looking away. Check our map to see how dense this surveillance net already is in your area, and visit our take-action page if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your community.
