Austin Crime Spree: Flock Cameras Shut Down, Suspects Caught #shorts

Rogan Rapid · 5 months ago

The short version: Rogan Rapid's clip touts Flock cameras in catching an Austin teen crime spree, but one feel-good anecdote doesn't justify a city-wide surveillance net.

Our Take

Credit to Rogan Rapid for getting this one in front of a big audience fast, but a 60-second clip of a resolved crime spree is exactly the kind of highlight reel Flock Safety and local PR teams love to amplify. Stolen cars, guns, and shots fired are genuinely scary, and nobody's arguing police shouldn't chase down the people responsible. The question we keep asking is different: does a single success story prove that blanketing a metro area with always-on license plate readers is the right trade-off for everyone who drives through it clean?

Notice the headline itself is a little garbled — "cameras shut down" sitting next to "suspects caught" — which is a reminder that these stories often get simplified in the retelling. Flock's own marketing leans hard on dramatic catches, but it rarely mentions the thousands of scans of ordinary commuters, delivery drivers, and neighbors that get logged, stored, and shared along the way to that one arrest. Austin residents deserve to know how many cameras are actually watching their streets and who has access to that data, not just the highlight reel.

If you want to see what's already been installed near you, check our camera map, and if you think your city council should be answering harder questions before renewing a Flock contract, our take-action page has concrete next steps.
