5G License Plates: Tracking Your Car or You? #shorts

3RD SHIFT With ABREW · 2 months ago

The short version: A short from 3RD SHIFT With ABREW flags 5G-connected license plates as a new frontier in vehicle tracking worth watching closely.

Our Take

Credit to 3RD SHIFT With ABREW for putting a spotlight on something that deserves more scrutiny than a 60-second format allows: the idea of license plates with built-in connectivity, marketed as anti-theft tech but carrying obvious potential for continuous location tracking. We can't verify every technical claim in the clip, but the underlying concern is legitimate and consistent with a pattern we track constantly — surveillance tools get sold to the public as convenience or safety features first, and the data-collection implications get mentioned later, if at all.

This is the same playbook we've seen with Flock Safety's ALPR network: cameras pitched as a way to catch stolen cars and wanted plates quietly become infrastructure for building location histories on every driver who passes by, stolen or not. Whether the tracker is embedded in a camera system or baked into the plate itself, the core problem is identical — nobody asked for a permanent record of everywhere their car has been, and once that data exists, it doesn't stay limited to its original stated purpose.

If smart plates do become normalized, they'll be stacking on top of an ALPR dragnet that already covers much of the country. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your routes, and visit our take-action page if you want to push back before plate-level tracking becomes the next layer of normalized surveillance.
