Mooresville Police Launch Drone First Responder Program
The short version: Mooresville PD's new Drone as First Responder program adds real-time aerial surveillance to a town already wired with Flock cameras, and residents got a press release, not a debate.
Our Take
Mooresville PD's own channel is understandably upbeat about its new "Drone First Responder" program, billed as a first for Iredell County. Six drones launching to calls before officers arrive sounds efficient on paper, but this is how surveillance infrastructure grows: one press release at a time, framed entirely around convenience and public safety, with no mention of retention policies, footage-sharing agreements, or who else gets access to that live video feed.
Drone as First Responder programs don't operate in a vacuum. They tend to pair with the same networks of automated license plate readers and camera grids we track everywhere else, feeding a broader surveillance picture of who's driving where and who's standing on which corner. A drone hovering over your backyard because a call came in nearby is a very different reality than a patrol car driving past, and it deserves public debate before launch, not after normalization.
If Mooresville is adding eyes in the sky on top of existing ALPR coverage, residents deserve to know the full scope of what's watching them.
