Public voices opinions on Minneapolis police using drones, and more headlines

WCCO - CBS Minnesota · 3 months ago

The short version: WCCO reports Minneapolis residents pushing back on MPD drone plans, a reminder that every new aerial tool expands the same surveillance dragnet as Flock ALPRs.

Our Take

Credit to WCCO - CBS Minnesota for getting Minneapolis residents on camera pushing back on police drones, because that public skepticism is exactly the instinct we need more of. Drones and license plate readers get pitched separately, but they're the same playbook: sell a narrow use case, then let the footprint quietly grow once the hardware and data pipelines are in place.

Minneapolis already has Flock cameras logging plates across the city, feeding a searchable database that officers can query without a warrant in most cases. Add drones to that mix and you're not just tracking where a car went, you're building a live eye-in-the-sky layer on top of the eye-on-the-street network that already exists. Once these systems are stacked, the combined picture of where people go, when, and how often gets a lot harder to walk back.

If you want to see what's already watching your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if Minneapolis or your city is weighing new surveillance tech, our take-action page has tools to help you speak up before it's a done deal.
