Automated License Plate Reader

Robert Kirvin · 2 months ago

The short version: A local creator's community Q&A on ALPRs shows how little residents actually know about the cameras watching their streets.

Our Take

Robert Kirvin's video taps into something we see constantly: most people have never had a real conversation about automated license plate readers until one shows up on their street. Community questions about who's watching, who has access, and why these cameras exist in the first place are exactly the right questions — they're just rarely answered with much transparency by local governments or Flock Safety itself.

That gap between "a camera appeared" and "here's exactly how it's used, stored, and shared" is where most ALPR harm happens. Departments roll these systems out quietly, often through grants or quick council votes, long before residents get a chance to ask the basic questions this video raises. By the time people are asking in the comments, the network is already built and feeding data to agencies far outside their town.

We'd rather see those questions asked before installation, not after. If you want to know whether your neighborhood already has readers in place, check our map, and if you're ready to push back on unchecked surveillance locally, our take-action guide walks through what that actually looks like.
