Residents raise concerns over Flock cameras at public forum

Another week, another city council or public forum where residents find out their streets are already wired with license plate readers — and this time it's Huntsville's turn. Credit to FOX54 News Huntsville for actually showing up and giving airtime to the people asking basic questions: who has access to this data, how long is it stored, and why wasn't the public consulted before the cameras went up in the first place. That last part is the pattern we see everywhere — Flock Safety pitches these systems to police departments and small working groups, contracts get signed, cameras get bolted to poles, and only after the fact do residents get a chance to weigh in, if they get one at all.

What's notable here isn't that Huntsville is unique — it's that it's completely typical. City after city discovers the same thing: a private company is running a de facto surveillance network on public roads, quietly logging the comings and goings of every driver, and the public forum happens after the infrastructure is already live. That backwards order of operations is by design. It's much easier to defend an existing system than to win a fair debate before it exists.
