More COPS arrested! FLOCK HAS TO GO! You're Tracked and don't even know it!

James Madison Media · 9 months ago

The short version: James Madison Media spotlights officers misusing Flock data and the hidden taxpayer cost of a camera network most drivers never notice.

Our Take

James Madison Media's latest video lands on two threads we keep coming back to: the human failure point and the money trail. Reports of officers being arrested for abusing license plate reader access aren't a glitch in the system — they're a feature of building a surveillance network first and asking about accountability later. Every Flock camera is a standing invitation for someone with a badge and a login to go looking for an ex, a rival, or a story that has nothing to do with public safety.

The video's other point — that residents are often funding this surveillance through city contracts without ever being asked — is exactly why we built our map. Most people genuinely don't know how many of these cameras are logging their movements block by block, who has access to that data, or how long it's stored. Transparency shouldn't depend on a YouTube creator doing the legwork local officials won't.

Credit to James Madison Media for keeping this in front of people and pushing the map resource. If you want to see what's tracking your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back at a city council meeting or through a records request, our take-action page has what you need to get started.
