Not All LPRs Are Created Equal

Flock · 5 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promo video sells 'objective policing' through ALPRs, but the pitch glosses over who watches the watchers and what happens to all that location data.

Our Take

This one's straight from the source: Flock Safety's marketing team, not an independent journalist, made this video. That matters. "Not all LPRs are created equal" is a sales pitch dressed up as industry insight, and "objective policing" is the kind of phrase that sounds great in a brochure but says nothing about retention limits, audit trails, or who's allowed to run a plate search at 2 a.m. without a warrant.

Faster case closures and "real-time intelligence" are the features Flock wants police chiefs and city councils to focus on. What the video won't mention: the thousands of cameras now logging every car that passes, the data-sharing agreements between agencies that blur jurisdictional lines, and the long track record of ALPR systems being misused or breached. Scale is the whole business model here — more cameras, more networked data, more agencies plugged in — and scale is exactly what should worry anyone who cares about not having their daily movements cataloged by default.

We'd rather you see the infrastructure for yourself than take a vendor's word for what it's doing in your town. Check our camera map to see what's already been deployed near you, and if you want to push back, our take-action page has concrete steps for raising this with your local council.
