West Lafayette police address concerns over Flock cameras
The short version: West Lafayette PD held a public Q&A on Flock cameras, but reassurances from the department running the system aren't the same as independent oversight.
Our Take
Star City News covered a West Lafayette police meeting where officials fielded resident questions about their Flock Safety camera deployment. Credit to the department for showing up in public, but let's be clear about what these meetings usually are: the agency that bought the cameras explaining why the cameras are fine, to a room full of people who weren't consulted before the purchase.
This is the standard playbook we see town after town. Questions about retention periods, who can access the data, whether it's shared with ICE or other agencies, and how audit logs work rarely get satisfying answers because the honest answer is often "we trust the vendor" or "policy can change." A community meeting isn't the same as an enforceable ordinance, a public audit, or a city council vote with teeth. If West Lafayette residents actually want accountability, the ask should be hard data: audit logs, search justifications, and a binding policy, not a Q&A session.
